Hexagram 35 of 64 · King Wen sequence

Progress

晋 · jìn

Above: Fire
Below: Earth

Fire above earth: the sun rising — visible advancement, won through visible brightness of conduct.

The sun comes up over the earth: Progress is the hexagram of visible advancement — promotion, recognition, the season when what you do is seen and rewarded. The old image is a prince bestowing horses in a single morning: generous, fast, public.

Its counsel is about the engine of visibility: progress like this comes from brightness of conduct — being legible, reliable, and honest in the light. The regret it warns of: pressing forward no matter what, like a rat in a corner. Advance, but advance on merit, not momentum alone.
