Hexagram 3 of 64 · King Wen sequence

Difficulty at the Beginning

屯 · zhūn

Above: Water
Below: Thunder

Water above thunder: sprout under soil, knotted. Every beginning is overgrown — help arrives, and should be accepted.

Thunder rumbles under a full sky: the first shoot is strong, but the field is a tangle. Difficulty at the Beginning names the specific frustration of anything genuinely new — nothing moves in a straight line, and the instinct to force a path makes the tangle worse.

The tradition is unusually gentle here: this is the moment to ask for help and take it. A sprout does not apologise for needing water. Fill the auxiliary team, accept the appointment, let structure do what willpower cannot yet.
